To Kill a Murderer

It is for the best of humanity to allow capital punishment, for we, being Utilitarians, are interested in the greatest good for the greatest number of people. I find, in fact, lamentable that philanthropists want to keep alive criminals that have afflicted our society with aggravated murders. These claimed “lovers of mankind” are blind to the harm they will indirectly inflict upon humanity by leaving these murderers alive. These criminals have proved through their actions that they are unworthy of living. For the security of mankind it is indispensable to allow capital punishment. By eliminating these people from our society we are ensuring the well-being of all, for anyone else can become their victim.

If we leave these murders alive and punish them any other way, the memory of the crime and its punishment will eventually fade away and there will be no difficulty in committing the crime again. Why would we want to keep these people alive?

By implementing the death penalty, many people that have an impulse to kill others will restrain themselves from doing it because of the consequences –that is in pro of humanity. And also, if criminals are predisposed in their genes, by killing murderers we will be protecting our future generations from possessing such malicious genes. Furthermore, since we, human beings, are active learners, we can condition generations to value and respect the lives of our neighbors. And even if aggravated murders still occur, which they will, people will know, and even the murderer himself, that he is unworthy of living such a violent life.

I find it sad that we are debating whether the death penalty is an appropriate punishment for murder or not, when in fact, I strongly believe that capital punishment should be applied in many more cases.

  2. even though it is true that we have to seek harmony with our environment, we Confucians don't believe in the capital punishment, it is best when he or she receives a kind of humiliation in order for his repent.

  3. The Ten Commandments state: you shall not kill. Under no circumstances should a person take another person's life. If one does take another person's life in self-defense one must go to confession.

  4. The death penalty is definitely unethical and wrong. Humans do not have the right to kill others. It is ironic to fight against murderers and then become one by killing the one who killed. No one has the right to take away someone else's life. If one has killed, karma will hunt him. If he/she has caused harm to someone, he/she will suffer and not become enlightened. People should live in peace and harmony physically and mentally. Remember: Treat others the way you want to be treated.
